Mixed Doubles
The first Club competition of the 2019 season was held on Sunday 12th May on a lovely sunny afternoon, which was a great relief and joy after the recent cold and windy wet weather.
The event was changed from Men's Doubles to a Mixed Doubles - boosting the numbers and giving the ladies chance to participate.
Our thanks are due to Gordon Lathwell for organising the match so efficiently and to the Catering Team for the delicious buffet tea - after which the semi-final and final games were played.

The results were: Runners up - Gordon Lawrence and Callum Donlan and the Winners were Ian Hamer and President Dennis Young, so Vice President Susan West presented the prizes as her first official duty!

Our next Club competition is a 'Mixed Triples' on Sunday 2nd June with a slightly earlier start of 1pm (Not 1.30pm) as originally published.
Sign up before 28 May. There will be light refreshments included in the cost.

Full list of Sunday events on fliers in the Club House and on line.

Mixed Triples - Sunday Club Event - 2 June 2019
This event, held on 2 June in the afternoon, proved to be a most enjoyable one. It was good to have some of our newer members participating and the results were intriguing.
The runners up were Emm Mansfield, Barry Legg and new member Paul Eason. The winners were Margaret Ward-Davies, Joe Taylor and Reg Baggaley (whose ages, totalled together, probably made them the oldest team on the green!) Congratulations to them all and to all the other participants.
Our thanks are due to Dennis and Gordon for running the event so well and to the catering team for keeping the cuppas flowing during the afternoon and providing a delicious buffet to refuel the players due to play the semis and final.
We would also like to thank everyone for the raffle gifts and purchase of tickets which makes all the difference between loss or profit on the day.

Looking ahead our next 2 Sunday events are:-
· Mid-summer Open Doubles on Sunday 30th June run by David Hayton. This is for visitors only and is fully booked. Members welcome to watch or help as required
· RBC open men’s doubles on Sunday 21 July. Make sure you sign up as soon as possible if you would like to take part.

Derby War Memorial Challenge - 25 July 2019
Congratulations to the 1st Team Vets, who won the Memorial Cup on 25 July 2019 by beating Allestree 1st Team in the final - held at Chaddesden Park.
A magnificent achievement by the team and a ‘feather in the cap’ for Team Captain Gordon Lathwell.
The last time Rykneld won this prestigious trophy was way back in 1996 - so this victory should not be under-estimated.
It was a fight to the finish - with Rykneld winning by the slender margin of just 1 point.
An important step towards RBC becoming the pre-eminent crown green bowling club in Derbyshire.

Open Invitation - 4 August 2019
This proved to be a most enjoyable day when Rykneld members invited friends from other Clubs for a doubles ‘round robin’ competition.
The start of the competition proved harassing for the organisers due to 3 players not turning up, requiring some last-minute rescheduling.
In the end, 2 Rykneld members played together to fill the gap. (The fact that the pair went on to win was a slight embarrassment!).
The competition proved a nostalgic occasion for the Taylor family, when 3 well-known bowlers (Joe, brother Roy and sister-in-law Sheelagh), were in the same doubles match – something that hadn’t happened in their long history of bowling!
Thanks were due to the catering teams for keeping everyone so well fed and watered.
Prime Timers - 22 August 2019
Sixteen of the best

I am Team FGB - 24 August 2019
A scorching hot day for Rykneld to again host the 'I am Team GB' event as official 'Play Makers'.
Some very proficient 'first-time' bowlers turned up for the 10:00 a.m. to noon training session - and hopefully they were made to feel very welcome.
Thanks to RBC members for helping out with this event.

Gold Letter Finals - 15 September 2019
The event was splendidly organised by Gordon Lathwell - with photos courtesy of Graham Buckley.

Noteable achievements were:-
Ann Lewis - Finalist in 3 events (Ladies Doubles, Senior Ladies and Ladies Scratch) and a winner in all three events.
Gordon Lathwell - Winner of the Senior Men's Trophy - a club record five times winner of this event.

3rd Team Vets - 3 October 2019
The last match of the 2019 season was marked with a buffet and a presentation to the Vets 3rd Team Captain, David Read.
The buffet and presentation (courtesy of Gerry O'Shaughnessy) was a magnificent 100 year-old vintage water jug.
This had been engraved - "Dave - Our Captain. From all the Team."
A fitting and memorable end to the season.

Sounds Familiar - 5 October 2019
We were delighted to welcome 'Sounds Familiar' back to the Club to provide an evening of entertainment - with songs from the 60's including The Seekers, The Mamas and The Papas, The Beatles and Neil Diamond. A very polished performance, with superb harmonies. Congratulations to Linda, Sue and Chris.

From their first visit in October 2017, the group have enjoyed increasing success and have performed at over 40 venues in the first 9 months of 2019.

Many thanks to everyone who was involved with organising the event from ticket printing & sales, stocking & running the bar and all the catering arrangements.

Also, many thanks to those who were able to come along and make the evening a great success.

CPR & Defibrillator Training - 30 October 2019
Many thanks go to Victoria Baker and Wendy Hawkins (Resuscitation and Simulation Trainers) from Royal Derby Hospital - for running most enlightening and excellent CPR / Defibrillator training sessions at the Club on the morning of Wednesday 30 October 2019.

The sessions were attended by some 50 club members (and a few guests) - who are now trained in how to conduct CPR and how to operate the Club's ZOLL AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Hopefully this training will never be needed...!!!

An evening session will be organised as soon as possible to cater for Club members who could not attend the day-time sessions because of work commitments.

Annual Award Ceremony - 14 November 2019
The Dinner and Award Ceremony was held at Mickleover Golf Club on 14 November 2019 - same venue as last year.
An excellent meal attended by 59 members - welcomed on arrival by Dennis Young.
After the meal, award winners were read out by Susan West and trophies were presented by Dennis.
Photos courtesy of Graham Buckley.
Ann Lewis could not make the event - so her winning trophies were presented at the next club social event on 4 December 2019.
