August 2019 Update
The Club have had a busy 2nd half of the month with several events being ‘Gold Letter’ matches - leading to the GL Finals all to be completed on Finals Sunday 15th September. Do come and offer your support on that day!

The Ray Hanson Open Doubles proved to be a pleasant and successfull day on 18th August. Calvin Jackson, ably assisted by Neil Desmond, got play underway as soon as registration was closed and the draw was made.

With 26 pairs, inevitably some pairs had a long wait for their 1st game - the delicious snacks prepared by the catering team helped the time pass!

The games showed a high standard of bowling, with the green in excellent condition. After some very close games the winners were Phil Meacham and Garry Stevenson. Runners up were Dale Spedding and Garry Daguish. Calvin thanked all concerned in helping the day go well.

Further Gold Letter events took place: the following Sunday August 25th was the Mixed Doubles and then Wednesday evening 28th August Gold Letter Senior Ladies.

The month is rounded off with Rykneld hosting the Belper League Saturday Singles Cup Final on Saturday evening 31st August when RRA v Marehay A.

Guess what? The Gold Lettter Ladies Scratch starts at 1.30pm Sunday 1st September. A good start for Autumn!

August 2019 at Rykneld Bowling Club
This month will prove to be a busy time with competitions at the weekends as well as League commitments. We hope members will enjoy participation in the events whether playing, helping, or just supporting by being there.

Sunday 4th August proved to be a most enjoyable day when Rykneld members invited friends from other Clubs for a doubles ‘round robin’ competition. The start of the competition proved harassing for the organisers due to 3 players not turning up, requiring some last-minute rescheduling. In the end, 2 Rykneld members played together to fill the gap. (The fact that the pair went on to win was a slight embarrassment!).
The competition proved a nostalgic occasion for the Taylor family, when 3 well-known bowlers (Joe, brother Roy and sister-in-law Sheelagh), were in the same doubles match – something that hadn’t happened in their long history of bowling! Thanks were due to the catering teams for keeping everyone so well fed and watered.

Sunday 11th August was the first of a series of Gold Letter competitions which are played as far as semi-finals results. All the Gold Letter Finals are played on Sunday 15th September 2019 and the winners names are put on the Club House Boards.
Semi - Finalists are Liam Kirkland and Eddie Springer v Gordon Lathwell and Ray Selley.

On Sunday 18th August we have been invited to host the Ray Hanson Open Doubles at Rykneld. The South Derbyshire CGBA Committee Members are in charge of the event, which is a knock out competition with handicaps. £10 per pair; sign up and pay up on the day. Scratch/Start 10.30 am. Light refreshments and bar will be available.

In the following week Rykneld players, over 80 years of age, are invited to compete in the ‘Prime timers’ - an Annual events, sponsored by a few club members on Thursday 22nd August.

On the final Sunday of the month 25th August, the Gold Letter Mixed Doubles Games will be played.

Congratulations to the 1st Team Vets, who won the Memorial Cup on 25 July 2019 by beating Allestree 1st Team in the final - held at Chaddesden Park.
A magnificent achievement by the team and a ‘feather in the cap’ for Team Captain Gordon Lathwell.
The last time Rykneld won this prestigious trophy was way back in 1996 - so this victory should not be under-estimated.
It was a fight to the finish - with Rykneld winning by the slender margin of just 1 point.
An important step towards RBC becoming the pre-eminent crown green bowling club in Derbyshire.
