The Best of Derby Vets v The Best of Burton Vets
A great many thanks to Kevin Braithwaite, Secretary and Treasurer of Derby Vets Bowls League, for organising the 'Best of the Vets' event.
It was staged on Tuesday 8 August 2017, simultaneously at two venues - the home leg at Rykneld and the away leg at Stretton.
Many thanks also to the Burton Secretary, Malcolm Cheese, for organising the Burton Team and the Stretton Fixture.
The event at Rykneld was a joy to watch, with some great bowling from both teams.
Although the weather was a bit mixed - it did not dampen enthusiasm and spectators were treated to a splendid exhibition of competitive bowling.
Overall, Derby Vets defeated Burton Vets:-
- Home leg at Rykneld Derby Vets 145 - Burton Vets 128
- Away leg at Stretton Derby Vets 144 - Burton Vets 145
- Aggregate Derby Vets 289 - Burton Vets 273
Congratulations to Gordon Lathwell and John Taylor from Rykneld who played for the Derby Vets team and won their doubles match. Scorecard at Photo Gallery 2017 - Best of the Vets
The event signified the revival of an old tradition that was in danger of being lost for ever. The last event took place in 1992 - and it was cancelled in 1993 following some controversy about players’ ages. Now that it has been revived, it is hoped that Kevin will be able to organise it on an annual basis.
Many thanks to the supporters from Rykneld and from other clubs - which helped to make the day a great success. For Rykneld, it was a pleasure to host the event - and we do hope to see the teams competing again next year.

The final of the Vets Memorial Cup was played at Spondon on Thursday 27 July 2017. Spectators witnessed some excellent bowling from both sides.
Allestree proved to be the better side on the day and were the winners for 2017.
Congratulations to them and commiserations to the Rykneld team
Round 3 of the County Cup was played on Sunday 30 July at Buxton Park, a very tricky green in scenic surroundings. Unfortunately, Marehay were the stronger side, winning all 10 matches, but it was good experience. We were well looked after by members of the host green who gave us a warm welcome - and we were very lucky to get away with just a light shower. Round 4 was also played later on - and Old Whittington were the winners over Marehay.
A most enjoyable day even though Rykneld team didn't win - but none of our players gave up trying. Our thanks to the captain, Gordon Lathwell for all his hard work and enthusiasm in getting the teams together.

The Men's Doubles competition on Sunday 14 May was won by -Jamie Brown and Ian Hamer.
Runners up were Liam Kirkland and Colin McDonald.
Many thanks to Jim Leake and all those who helped to run the competition (which went very smoothly) and to the Catering Team for the delicious cakes that went with the 'cuppas'.
A great turnout and a splendid day. We were most fortunate for very pleasant weather too.
